Before Your Embarkation Day

Use Online Check-In

Most cruise lines now offer online check-in, allowing you to complete most of the check-in process before you even arrive at the terminal. Take advantage of this feature to save time and avoid long lines at the check-in counters. In addition, most cruise lines will allow you to check-in online up to 48 days prior to your embarkation day.

Download the App

Download your cruise lines app prior to embarkation day. The cruise lines app will help you find activities and places to dine around the ship. Also, included on the app are the cruise ship's deck plans. I always recommend reviewing the deck plans before boarding the ship, so you will know exactly where you want to go as soon as you step onboard.

Attach a Credit Card to Your Onboard Account

Attaching a credit card to your onboard account before embarkation day will help ensure a smooth first day onboard. Guest services usually has long lines on embarkation day, so taking this step in advance will help you avoid those lines. With a credit card linked to your account, you can make purchases around the ship seamlessly, and charges will be automatically billed to your card at the end of your cruise.

Need to Know:

Guest services' lines are really long on embarkation day. If you can wait to go to guest services, it's a good idea to do so.

Luggage Tags

Print your luggage tags out ahead of time for a smooth embarkation day. Make sure to attach the luggage tags provided by your cruise line to each piece of your checked baggage. This will help the porters at the terminal quickly identify your bags and get them to your stateroom.

Pack a Carry-On Bag

If you decide to leave your luggage with the porter at the terminal, which I highly recommend avoiding carrying your bags around the ship until your room is ready, you'll need a carry-on bag. Make sure to have your important documents, such as your passport and boarding pass, along with any medication, phone chargers, and other essential items you'll need until your luggage is delivered. Typically, your room won't be available until around 1:00 or 1:30, so you won't have access to your luggage before then. Some people also like to pack a swimsuit in their carry-on so they can head to the pool right away.

Fly in Early

It is highly recommended to fly in at least the day before your embarkation day to allow for any flight delays or cancellations.

On Your Embarkation Day
Arrive at Your Boarding Arrival Time

One of the most important tips for a stress-free embarkation day is to arrive at your scheduled arrival time. This helps avoid confusion and congestion during the boarding process.

Tip:

If you are running late, don't worry—cruise lines will still let you board as long as you arrive by the final boarding time. There’s no need to call the cruise line to inform them.

Need to Know:

If you arrive earlier than your scheduled time, most cruise lines won't turn you away. Recently, some cruise lines have been less strict about arrival times. However, it's still best to arrive at your designated time to avoid any potential delays before entering the terminal.

Have Your Documents Ready

Before you even arrive at the cruise terminal, ensure you have all your necessary documents ready to go. This includes your passport, cruise boarding pass, and any other required identification. Having these documents easily accessible will streamline the check-in process and prevent any delays.

Tip:

Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your debarkation day.

Muster

One of the first things you do as soon as you are on the ship is go to your muster station. You can find this on your boarding pass or your room key, if you already have it. Some cruise lines will allow you to muster on the app prior to boarding the ship. Mustering is something every passenger must do before the cruise ship can sail away. So, it is best to get this done first and out of the way.

Eating

One of the most crowded areas on embarkation day is the restaurants and buffet. I recommend eating a hearty breakfast before boarding the ship so you don't arrive super hungry. This way, you can wait for the lines to die down before grabbing a bite to eat.

Dining Schedule Changes

If you need to make changes to your dining reservations, it is recommended to do so as early as possible on embarkation day, rather than waiting until dinner time. For example, if you have a specific dining time but would like to switch to Any-Time dining for more flexibility, address this as soon as you can to avoid long lines later.

Kids Club

If you have kids, register them for the kids' club as soon as possible to avoid long lines later in the evening. This way, after dinner, they can go straight to the kids' club and meet their new friends for the week without having to wait in line.

Explore the Ship

One of the best parts of embarkation day is exploring the ship and discovering where you want to spend your time during your cruise vacation. Use your cruise ship app to help you navigate with maps and find all the activities available onboard.

Room Access

On most cruise ships, your room won't be ready until 1:00 or 1:30. If you checked your luggage with the porter, it will be delivered to your room once it's ready. Typically, it doesn't take long to receive your luggage. However, if there is a delay, it might be because your luggage was stopped for inspection to check for any banned items.

Now, that you have gotten to your room, unpacked and had a stress-free and smooth embarkation day, your cruise vacation can officially begin.
