If someone were to get off the ship and go directly to another ship for a consecutive sailing this would be referred to as a side-to-side cruise.

How Back-to-Back Cruising Works

When you arrive for your first sailing you will want to ensure Guest Services has you listed as a back-to-back cruiser, and also be sure your room steward is aware of this as well. Otherwise, they will be expecting you to leave the ship on debarkation day.

The Process

You will receive a letter in your stateroom with instructions for debarkation day. You will be directed to meet in a general location, usually the theater or another common area, to receive your new room card for the next sailing.

Typically, back-to-back passengers must wait until all other passengers have disembarked. Once everyone else is off, you may have to disembark and go through customs in the cruise terminal, passport in hand, before reboarding ahead of new passengers. Some ports, like Seattle, allow you to stay onboard without going through customs, while others, like Florida, require disembarkation and a customs check.

Upon reboarding, some cruise lines welcome back-to-back cruisers with a special luncheon or champagne toast. You can return to your stateroom as soon as customs clearance is complete, ahead of new passengers, who often must wait until 1:00 PM.

How to Book a Back-to-Back Cruise

There are no dedicated back-to-back cruise bookings or special discounts. Ask your travel agent or cruise line about any discounts for the sailings you’re considering. Booking your second sailing while on the first may offer discounts, with Guest Services or Next Cruise (for Royal Caribbean) assisting you.

When booking, try to secure the same cabin for both sailings to avoid packing and switching rooms. If the same cabin isn’t available, inform your room steward. Most cruise lines will have your steward pack your luggage and deliver it to your new cabin on debarkation day.

Onboard Packages Purchased

Remember that back-to-back cruises are considered separate sailings. Any packages purchased on the first sailing, such as Wi-Fi, drink, or dining packages, will need to be purchased again for the second sailing.
